Christian Pii (b. 1975) is a Danish artist based in Aarhus. His practice unfolds in an expressive and surreal universe shaped by psychological tension, symbolism and the unstable landscapes of the human mind.
In Christian Pii’s paintings, faces and bodies dissolve into unusual constellations. Forms fragment, stretch or merge, creating dreamlike scenes that challenge logic and perception. The works often carry a sense of unrest - a visual language shaped by inner chaos, vulnerability and the darker corners of the psyche. Themes of identity, anxiety, transformation and longing run throughout his work, revealing figures that seem caught between states of becoming and collapse.
Working across different techniques and materials, Christian Piiv builds his surfaces in thick layers of paint that create a tactile and almost sculptural quality. Strong contours and abrupt transitions between colour fields generate intensity and movement within the image. The colour palette is chosen not to describe reality but to amplify emotional charge and psychological depth.
Drawing and painting have been part of Christian Pii’s life for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Africa, Saudi Arabia and Denmark, creativity became a constant companion during a childhood largely free from digital distractions. Pencils, crayons and brushes formed an early language that has followed him throughout life.
Alongside his artistic path, Christian Pii pursued another childhood dream and became a police officer in 2003. He continues to work as an investigator and teacher at the Danish Police Academy. For years, art existed in the background, often overshadowed by family life, work and other responsibilities. Yet creative impulses rarely disappear - they accumulate.
In recent years this suppressed creative force has returned with renewed intensity. What once lived quietly beneath the surface has grown stronger and demanded space. The result is a body of work that feels both urgent and deeply personal - paintings that investigate the emotional undercurrents of the human condition and give form to the forces that move beneath our conscious awareness.
