David Juárez(ES)

David Juárez Ollé is a Barcelona-born artist based in Aarhus, whose works move between surreal figuration and emotional introspection. Through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions, he explores the fragile space between melancholy, identity, and hope.

About

David Juárez Ollé creates deeply personal works that exist somewhere between surrealism and emotional realism. His paintings often begin with a face - sometimes a self-portrait, sometimes an anonymous figure - functioning as an open vessel. From there, layers of feeling, memory, and subconscious thought begin to surface.

His visual language is defined by intense, searching eyes, fragmented forms, and a quiet tension between vulnerability and strength. There is a recurring sense of melancholy in his work - not as something heavy, but as a shared human condition. Rather than hiding it, Juárez leans into it, transforming it into something reflective, even beautiful.

Material plays a central role. Many of his works are painted on reclaimed surfaces - old canvases, discarded wood, found objects - each carrying its own history. This choice creates a dialogue between past and present, object and emotion, adding depth and authenticity to the final piece.

There is also a subtle surreal quality running through his practice. Figures dissolve, merge, or drift into abstract environments where logic loosens its grip. Titles such as “Illusions in Your Mind”, “Fractured & Healing”, and “The Nature of the Mind” reflect a continuous investigation of the inner world - how we process, break, and rebuild ourselves.

Originally from Barcelona, Juárez relocated to Aarhus in 2013, where the slower rhythm and northern atmosphere became an essential part of his artistic development. Here, his work has evolved into a contemplative practice rooted in self-exploration and emotional honesty.

His works invite the viewer to pause - to recognize something of themselves in the gaze of another - and to sit, even briefly, with the complexity of being human.
