Trine Kandborg (DK)
Trine Kandborg is a Danish visual artist whose expressive paintings move between abstraction and figurative elements. Through layered surfaces, bold color, and intuitive mark-making, her work explores emotion, atmosphere, and the dialogue between artist and canvas.
About
Trine Kandborg is a dedicated painter based in Vejle, Denmark, where she lives and works from her own studio. Her artistic journey began early, driven by a deep curiosity about materials, colors, and forms. Kandborg initially trained as a decorator and florist—fields that strengthened her understanding of visual composition and craft—and later found her true artistic calling in painting after mentorship with established artist Bente Bressendorf.
Kandborg’s creative process is rooted in experimentation and intuition. She works with a wide array of tools and media, including acrylics, oils, ink, charcoal, and even rust, embracing whatever materials help her explore light, texture, and emotion on canvas. Her abstract works often evoke a sense of the magical and the atmospheric, while her figurative pieces focus on expressions and moods that cannot easily be put into words.
Central to Kandborg’s artistic philosophy is the dialogue between artist and artwork. She describes her process as a constant conversation—laying down layers, scraping back, and reworking surfaces until the piece reveals itself. This dynamic method drives her to create work that is rich in depth, feeling, and visual tension.
Trine Kandborg’s paintings have been featured in exhibitions such as local art fairs and solo shows, and she has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects like the Edens Vugge book project, where her paintings accompany poetry in an exploration of human stories and imagination.
A committed creative whose artistry spans over two decades, Kandborg continues to evolve her practice, drawing inspiration from music, nature, and the sensory experience of painting itself.

The story behind
For many years I have had a quiet desire to create a painting on a scale where it was not just my hands, but my whole body that had to work.
The opportunity arose when I got in touch with an artist in Lübeck, who is now a close friend. She has a very large studio, so suddenly the size of the studio was no longer a limitation to my dream. I moved to Lübeck for 14 days, rolled out the enormous canvas and got to work.
The studio was open during the process, and the public could stop by and follow the process while the painting slowly took shape. There was no fixed plan – only time, scale and intuition. The work grew layer by layer, but was not finished. The painting was therefore rolled up and brought home to Denmark. I knew that it would soon be finished – because I was deeply interested in it. That is why I arranged a pop-up event in an empty shop here in Vejle, where I continued working for another 14 days. Here the work found its final form.
And then the next question arose:
What do you do with a painting of that size?

Of course, I don't have room for it in my private life, and I knew that if it was rolled up again, there was a big risk that it would never come to light again. So I contacted a good friend with a management position in a large factory. He offered to hang the work permanently on one of the factory walls - free of charge, until a buyer came along.
Today, the painting hangs fully stretched on the wall and can be experienced in its true scale. And if I should one day meet a collector or a gallery interested in a work of this size, I can take them there - so that the painting can be experienced exactly as it was created.
